5 Beer Bars You Need to Visit

Posted by 365 Things Boston on Fri, Apr 15, 2016

5200218267_2215c03778_o_1.jpgCheck out one of these bars in Boston for some of the rarest and best beers around:

1. The Tip Tap Room | Beacon Hill

"Brian Poe’s exotic chop house is best known for its kangaroo steaks and rattlesnake dishes. But with 46 craft taps and 50 different bottles to choose from, it’s also one of the top beer bars in town. The classic dark wood interior and thoughtful cocktails make it perfect for anything from brunch with grandma to a pretty serious date."

2. The Lower Depths | Kenmore Square

"Just a stone’s throw from Fenway, this underground (cash only!) temple of beer geekery keeps track of everything you drink so you never have to break out the beer journal. Why do the bartenders keep track? Because, if you manage to make it through the 30 taps and over 150 bottles, you get your own congratulatory mug. Gimmicky? Maybe. But with nine Flemish sours on the menu, the beer list certainly isn’t.  "

3. Stoddard's | Downtown

"One thing Downtown needs is more decent watering holes, and Stoddard’s certainly delivers.  Walking in the door feels like stepping on to the set of a film noir, complete with a dark wood bar, stainless steel taps, and vintage furniture. The selection includes 25 rotating casks and drafts and over 90 craft bottles both domestic and international. It has a perfect pub atmosphere, and the kegs to back it up."

4. Lord Hobo | Cambridge

"Lord Hobo is a beer bar through and through, with over 30 unique bottles and an enviable draft list that includes everything from the Lord Hobo brewery in Woburn, plus a wide array of microbrews from across the US. Rotation is so frequent that extremely rare beers crop up on tap every now and then, and the staff is very good about steering customers towards the ones they’ll love (the menu includes full descriptions of each beer, too). This place has a great neighborhood vibe, and the fact that the pub food is reliably un-boring also makes it a must try. Go for the Hobo Chili, which is made with steak, pork, confit, and veal."

5. Russell House Tavern | Harvard Square

"Russell House is a great all-purpose restaurant with a solid beer program. Each of the 13 taps represents a local craft brewery, and most are rotating, with two dedicated to interesting nitro and cask selections. The fresh-obsessed will be happy to know that a brand new cask is tapped every Thursday at 5pm in time for the weekend. In addition to an extensive bottle list, the restaurant also serves growlers of hard-to-find beer. Be sure to stick around until 11pm when oysters are $1 each."

5 Irish Pubs for St. Paddy's Day

Posted by 365 Things Boston on Wed, Mar 16, 2016

Boston recently got named the best city in the country to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! Celebrate at one of these Irish pubs:

1. The Burren (address and info)

Davis Square

Also known as where to get your annual dose of Irish seisiúns, The Burren is Irish music central, either for an informal afternoon jam or more formally staged root rock. Stop by on Thursday for live Irish music all day in the Front Room, with four special dinner shows happening in back throughout the afternoon and evening. And of course, corned beef and cabbage abound. (Oh, and don't worry, the place is large enough that you can forgive the outsized Tufts' student body representation.)

2. Matt Murphy's (address and info)

Coolidge Corner
Perfectly poured Guinness? Check. Shepherd’s pie and fish & chips? Check. A cocktail list that favors Irish whiskey as the spirit of choice? Check and check! Add one more check for the holiday: the traditional corned beef dinner.

3. J.J. Foley's (address and info)

South End
This place is a century-old lion that feeds and waters every ilk of Bostonian, then keeps them lingering with a backroom dartboard and a late-night weekend bar menu. That means there’s no need to crank the proceedings up to 11 on March 17th. Instead, enjoy some extra Irish tunes, and kitchen specials like the corned beef sandwich and an Irish boiling bacon, both available starting at 11am.

4. The Plough and Stars (address and info)

Porter Square
Any watering hole that’s held on since 1969 has our loyalty. Add in the friendly vibe, cordial bartenders, fascinating regulars, and the better-than-average draught menu, and you might as well stay put for the entire evening. It's not certain just what this place is doing for St. Patrick's Day, but we can't imagine it not being a great place to be.

5. Phoenix Landing (address and info)

Central Square
“The alternative Irish pub” gives you the Guinness-fueled dance party you can’t get at any other pub in town. Kick off the day with the Liverpool game in the morning, followed by live music in the afternoon, and DJed tunes at night.

5 Things to do this St. Patrick's Day

Posted by 365 Things Boston on Tue, Mar 15, 2016

Here are a few ideas from Boston.com for St. Patrick's Day 2016 in Boston:

1. St. Paddy’s Day Comedy Show

Limelight Studios near the Theater District hosts an evening of St. Patrick’s Day comedy featuring headliner Will Noonan who has appeared at The Oddball Comedy Festival, on NPR’s This American Life, and much more. (Wednesday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m.; Limelight Stage and Studios; $5; 18+)

2. St. Patrick’s Day Weekend Celebration at Assembly Row

Starting on St. Patrick’s Day, the family-friendly shopping experience at Assembly Row in Somerville will turn into one big raffle experience—patrons will each have five different ways to earn tickets. Erin’s Guild will also perform an Irish music set at American Fresh Brewhouse on Friday. (Thursday, March 17 at 9 a.m. to Sunday, March 20 at 11 p.m.; Assembly Row; free; all ages)

3. Green Briar St. Patrick’s Day Party

Charles River Rugby is hosting its fifth annual St. Patrick’s Day party, complete with live music, cheap beers, a photo booth, and much more. Suggested donations will help benefit the local men’s and women’s rugby teams. (Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m.; The Green Briar; $10 suggested donation; 21+)

4. St. Patrick’s Day Parade

The Southie St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a chance to honor our veterans, wear some green, and show your Irish pride. The march will feature floats from various community groups and plenty of bagpipes. (Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m.; South Boston; free, donations accepted here; all ages)

5. Irish Tenor Emmet Cahill

Emmet Cahill was once one of the many voices behind famed touring act Celtic Thunder. Now, in time for Ireland’s biggest holiday, the tenor is coming to Irish Social Club in West Roxbury to hit a few notes. (Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m.; Irish Social Club of Boston; $30; all ages)
