Rainn Wilson at the Wilbur

Posted by Susie Callahan on Sun, Nov 08, 2015

Rainn WilsonHead to the Wilbur Theatre Wednesday, November 11!

"For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone’s favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Viewers of The Office fell in love with the character and grew to love the actor who played him even more. Rainn founded a website and media company, SoulPancake, that eventually became a bestselling book of the same name. Now, he’s ready to tell his own story and explain how he came up with his incredibly unique sense of humor and perspective on life. He explains how he grew up “bone-numbingly nerdy before there was even a modicum of cool attached to the word.” The Bassoon King chronicles his journey from nerd to drama geek (“the highest rung on the vast, pimply ladder of high school losers”), his years of mild debauchery and struggles as a young actor in New York, his many adventures and insights about The Office, and finally, Wilson’s achievement of success and satisfaction, both in his career and spiritually, reconnecting with the artistic and creative values of the Bahá’í faith he grew up in.

RAINN WILSON is best known for his Emmy-nominated role as Dwight Schrute on NBC’s The Office, though today he’s equally well-known for his millions of Twitter followers and the philosophy website he founded, SoulPancake, which launched a New York Times bestselling book of the same name."

Best Halloween Parties in Boston

Posted by Susie Callahan on Wed, Oct 28, 2015

halloweenHalloween is just a few days away and Boston has no shortage of fun costume parties, bar crawls, dancing and more. Here are a few ideas:

1. Boston Official Crawl-O-Ween Bar Crawl | Faneuil Hall

"The Crawl-O-Ween bar crawl requests ticket buyers come dressed in their best Halloween attire. The bars participating in the event are located within the Faneuil Hall area, making it a convenient night out accessible by public transportation. Your ticket (options listed above) gives you access to the participating venues, but your drink purchases are not included. However, most of these bars will offer drink specials for ticket holders. A starting location is to be decided. Wristbands and bar crawl maps will be handed out at registration. Check the website for updated information as the dates approach."

2. GEM Italian Kitchen, Nightclub And Lounge | Downtown

"Head to GEM if you’re looking for a wild party filled with some of Boston’s best. A DJ will be spinning a mix of the Top 40 and popular dance tracks that will undoubtedly fill the dance floor. Many people like going to GEM because of its upscale, chic decor. Having a ticket grants you entry for the night. Mixing great music, fabulous drinks and amazing costumes makes GEM a guaranteed good time. "

3. Nightmare On Boston Harbor | Seaport

"This indoor Halloween BOOze cruise will host 800 passengers as it takes to the waters of the Boston Harbor. Costumes are strongly encouraged, as guests take to the seas for a night of BOOzing and dancing. There will be eight DJs on board bringing the best music to get every sexy ghost, mummy and witch moving and grooving. The website does note that there will be a cash-only bar on board, so guests are asked to bring cash on the ship."

Pumpkin Patch at Boston Public Market

Posted by Susie Callahan on Sat, Oct 24, 2015

"Bringing the farm to the city, Boston Public Market will create a pumpkin patch on the plaza alongside the Rose Kennedy Greenway outside the Market. Bring the family to stock up on locally sourced pumpkins and gourds for Halloween and enjoy pumpkin crafts, cider, and donuts on the plaza. Red Apple Farm – experts in more than just apples – will supply the pumpkins and host the patch, with a percentage of proceeds going to support local farmers, fishermen and food producers. Head inside the Market to get your pumpkin fill with seasonal treats like Pumpkin Spice Marshmallows from Sweet Lydia’s, Pumpkin Hot Chocolate from Taza, Pumpkin Ice Cream from Crescent Ridge, Pumpkin Affogato from George Howell Coffee, mulled spice vinegar beverages at Mangé, and more! (The pumpkin patch will be moved inside if it rains)."

3 Wine Bars to go to in Boston

Posted by Susie Callahan on Fri, Sep 11, 2015

"Fun fact: Bay Staters consume more wine per person than the residents of almost any other state -- a whopping 23 bottles a year each! (Only Vermont and New Hampshire have us beat.) Given this obvious oenophilia, it makes sense that bars devoted to sipping, swilling, and slurping the great grape have been cropping up all over Boston. Here’s where the locals go to get some wining with their dining:

1. Sip | Downtown
While the place looks a bit like a gussied-up version of a corporate cafeteria (complete with televisions and angular lighting fixtures), the food is anything but institutional -- the chefs plate everything from fresh sushi to Kobe sliders to bronzed swordfish belly. Wines are served in 2, 6, and 10oz pours and, since Sip's located a stone's throw from the Theater District, it's an ideal place to grab a glass (or two!) before you see Kinky Boots.

2. Belly Wine Bar | Kendall Square

The folks behind popular Cambridge enoteca Central Bottle have created the sexiest wine bar in Boston, complete with mouthwatering meats, exposed brick, good music, and hot people. But Belly has more than just swagger; it boasts a staggering wine list organized by flavor profile and a staff of wine geeks who will happily lead you to a new favorite.

3. Piattini Wine Cafe | Back Bay
With dozens of wines by the glass and a huge selection of bottles, Piattini’s wine list offers something for everyone, from the dedicated wine enthusiast to the friend along for the ride who prefers the chewy tannins and earthy aroma of Charles Shaw. Each wine is accompanied by a card describing its origins, flavor notes, and other facts, making the tapas-style Italian eatery a particularly good place to take less-experienced drinkers who want to sample and learn without derailing your conversation about the Pats."
