This day long celebration has a myriad of activities form which to choose. First Night is the oldest and largest New Year’s Eve celebration of the arts in North America. This is the 37th edition. It was founded in 1976 by a group of artists and community activists seeking to create an alternative, arts-oriented event for New Year’s Eve.  Buttons cost $18 each (children under 4 are admitted free), include a First Night program guide with purchase, and are available at dozens of locations, including Shaw’s Supermarkets, Star Market, Tedeschi Food Shops, and Au Bon Pain. The afternoon programming has a plethora of options and the evening is highlighted by featured musical acts Lee Fields (at New England Conservatory's Jordan Hall, The Magnetic Fields at Symphony Hall and John Scofield at Berklee Performance Center. The evening culminates with fireworks on the Boston Harbor at midnight.
